Your First Week in Canada

Your First Week in Canada: Documents You Should Sort Out First Your bags are down. You’re tired. Your brain is full. Good news: you don’t need to do everything at once.

✅ 1. Your ID and Immigration Papers

Keep these safe and easy to find:

  • Passport

  • Visa or PR documents

  • Work or study permit (if you have one)

  • Any papers given to you at the airport

Tip: Take photos or scans and save them on your phone or email.

✅ 2. Social Insurance Number (SIN)

This one is very important.

You need a SIN to:

  • Work in Canada

  • Get paid

  • Access some services

You can apply online or in person. It’s usually fast and free.

✅ 3. Address Proof

You may need proof of where you live for:

  • Bank

  • School

  • Some services

This can be:

  • A lease

  • A utility bill

  • A letter from your landlord

No permanent place yet? That’s okay. Start with what you have.

✅ 4. Health Card (When You’re Eligible)

Each province has its own health card system.

You’ll usually need:

  • Your immigration documents

  • Proof of address

  • Your ID

Some places have a waiting period. Don’t panic. Just apply as soon as you can.

✅ 5. Keep Everything in One Folder

Simple but powerful:

  • Use one folder (paper or digital)

  • Keep copies of everything

  • Label things clearly

Future you will say thank you 😅

💡 Small Reminder

You don’t need to finish everything in one day.
Just start. One document at a time.

That’s how settling in gets easier
